Philadelphia 2015

Our Vision

The US Social Forum taking place in Philadelphia, June 25-28, 2015 is a convergence driven by the understanding that people’s movements are what create social change. It is an opportunity for regional and issue-specific social justice projects to work toward broader unity. The goal is to map out action plans for a cohesive movement and organize to be on the offense against all forms of oppression.

The USSF is the next most important step in our struggle to build a powerful and inclusive movement that transforms this country and the world. We will reach far and near to lift up our people so that they can be heard and know they are not alone. Through learning together we will tear down divisions and put into practice the idea that “Your Fight Is My Fight.”

Call for Participation in the Third United States Social Forum

It’s time to move…together! Our survival is being threatened, and we’re fighting back: defying repressive authority, demanding our rights, challenging the forces that divide us.

We’re winning some battles, but the struggle to save the human race and the Earth requires us to come together. We need to listen to each other, compare our experiences, and discuss the future we want and how we will create it.

The US Social Forum and People’s Movement Assembly process, led by those most impacted by the current system, helps build alliances and develop action plans for our movement against all forms of oppression. We join movements in the World Social Forums who call on us to oppose our government’s role in this unjust global system.

In June 2015, our movement will gather in three US cities – Jackson, Mississippi; San Jose, California; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – and in locations in Canada and Mexico to build unity of purpose and action around three critical questions:

  • What is the function of an economy and how do we construct a just one?
  • What is true democracy and how can we realize it?
  • What is a nurturing and protective relationship with the Earth and how do we regain that?

We invite communities everywhere to organize People’s Movement Assemblies, attend the social forum people’s convergences, and help us build another world following the gatherings in 2015. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for!

Another World is Possible…Another World is Necessary.

The Philadelphia US Social Forum is anchored by organizations that are led by youth, poor people, and disabled people, and will be rooted in the themes of immigration, political democracy, disability, poverty, and youth rights. As a movement we will create spaces for strategy discussions, political education, People’s Movement Assemblies, local actions, art and culture, convergences, movement schools, marches, housing takeovers, community building, healing, and collective empowerment.

The Philadelphia USSF will take place in the Kensington community and North Philly along American Street and at Temple University. It will embody the festival feeling of the World Social Forums and many of the social forums that have been held in the Global South. There will be large outdoor gatherings, massive tents, and outdoor stages that will be seen and felt by ordinary Philadelphians. Neighboring churches, halls, organizational headquarters, schools, and underutilized buildings will complement the outdoor venues. We believe that part of demonstrating that “another world is possible,” is showing what can be done to transform areas of abandonment and neglect into new forms of social organization–less commodified, more humanizing, creative, vibrant and serving human needs.
